Syarikat Islam (abbreviated SI), or Sarekat Islam, formerly called Sarekat Dagang Islam (abbreviated as SDI) was established on October 16, 1905 by Haji Samanhudi.
SDI was the first organization born in Indonesia, at first the organization formed by Haji Samanhudi and his friends was an association of Islamic traders who opposed Dutch politics giving freedom of entry of foreign merchants to control the peoples economic competition at that time.
At the first SDI congress in Solo in 1906, his name was changed to Sarikat Islam.
