Translated into French by Charles Baudelaire, it is part of the collection New Extraordinary Stories.SummaryThe narrator is invited by his friend Doctor Ponnonner to the nocturnal and improvised examination of a mummy recently discovered by a certain Captain Sabretash in the mountains of Libya, above Thebes.
The pseudo-scientists (in fact, simple friends of the doctor) find, on the first crate, the name of the mummy, Allamistakeo ("nothing but an error-o"); Arriving at Third and Body, one of them suggests an experiment with a voltaic pile.
Under shock, the four or five thousand year old mummy suddenly wakes up, and, in "purest Egyptian style", immediately reproaches them sharply for their harshness towards him.The amateur Egyptologists excuse themselves and seat their host with a cigar and a drink.
In the conversation that follows, the latter explains that his time was very advanced, significantly more than theirs, and that mummification offered a break from a life that was too long (themes taken up in Adèle Blanc-Sec).
