In the 2022/23 season, the large-scale research project GRIPS theatAR took place at Berlin's GRIPS Theater. The aim was to experimentally test how theater and augmented reality can be combined and what new aesthetics, narrative styles and formats can emerge. The question was always how appropriate technical innovations could be combined with the work and production routines of an ensemble and repertory theater.
In this app, the results of the research are now prepared in the form of a toolkit. People who have not yet come into contact with AR should be able to get a feel for what kind of theater experiences can be created with this technology. For those who want to delve deeper into AR in the theater, you can also find detailed instructions on the technical processes and all the program code that was created as part of GRIPS theatAR on the project's homepage. This is available as open source and is intended to serve as an invitation to anyone interested to continue working on measuring the border area between AR and theater.
